About Me

Hello and a warm welcome to Nurturing Minds Tuition. My name is Rebecca, I am a mother of one and an experienced tutor with over 10 years' experience of supporting pupils one-to-one and in groups, both privately and in schools.

Through individually-tailored tuition lessons, I am passionate about improving young people’s confidence, motivation and resilience so that they are able to fulfil their academic potential and enjoy learning, while taking care of their mental health.

Qualifications

In 2013, I achieved a first in my undergraduate degree at the University of Bristol in French and Music. Following this, I completed my Teaching English as a Foreign Language qualification in Barcelona, Spain. After several years of working in education (including primary and secondary schools), I developed a strong interest in child development, mental health and educational psychology. This led me to train as a volunteer counsellor at Childline and undertake a masters in psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University, which I passed with distinction in 2020.

I have an enhanced DBS check, which can be made available on request, as well as safeguarding and child protection policies/ procedures in place.

Experience

French

I have over 10 years' experience of teaching children and young people from the age of 5 all the way up to adult learners of all ages.

French: As a French tutor, I have helped students with GCSE, iGCSE, IB, AS and A level exams. Additionally, I have prepared students for scholarship entrance exams to private schools (including Charterhouse in Surrey) and worked with children who needed to improve their language skills due to an upcoming move to a French-speaking country.

I can help with all aspects of the French language: speaking, listening, reading and writing (including grammar, translation and spelling).

Primary English and maths (key stage 1 and 2):

I have helped many pupils increase their motivation, confidence and enjoyment of English and maths, as well as improve their ability in the subjects, improve their school test results and pass entrance exams to selective schools. As a tutor and a former teaching assistant in a special school, I have considerable experience of tailoring my support to pupils with special educational needs.

I can help with all aspects of KS1 and KS2 maths and English including preparation for national curriculum tests (SATs) and 7+/ 11+ entrance exams.

Entrance exams for grammar and independent schools (7+/ 11+/ CAT4/ Common Entrance):

I have extensive experience of preparing pupils for 7+ and 11+ entrance exams to grammar and independent schools in Sussex, Surrey and London. These schools include:

  • Christ’s Hospital, Horsham

  • King’s College School, Wimbledon

  • St John’s School, Leatherhead

  • Epsom College

  • Downsend School, Leatherhead

  • Nonsuch High School for girls, Cheam

  • Sutton Grammar School for boys, Sutton

  • Tiffin Girls’ School, Kingston

I can help with non-verbal/ verbal reasoning tests, maths and English.

As a former grammar school pupil myself, I am also able to draw on this experience to help my tutees prepare as I still remember what it felt like to sit my 11+ test over 23 years ago!

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): As an ESOL teacher, I have taught English in secondary schools in France and to adults in Spain. In Spain, I taught both one-to-one lessons and group lessons in a language school and a construction company. In England, I have also taught ESOL to primary age children on a one-to-one basis either face-to-face in England or to students in Asia via Skype.

I can help with all aspects of the English language: speaking, listening, reading and writing (including grammar and spelling).

Most of my lessons have been face-to-face. However, during the COVID pandemic, I worked with more primary and secondary aged students via Skype and Zoom which confirmed that language teaching, in particular, can work very well online.

Tutoring Approach

Tutoring Approach

Having worked with and learnt from a range of talented professionals in education and child mental health - including experienced teachers, Oxbridge-educated tutors, psychotherapists and educational psychologists - I have been able to develop an effective and holistic tutoring service.

I believe that our job as tutors is not just about helping young people fulfil their potential academically, but about fostering their self-belief and resilience so that they grow up to be mentally healthy adults.

Understanding of psychology: As a tutor with a masters in psychology and experience of working in child mental health, I endeavour to understand the pupil holistically. I use my understanding of educational psychology to identify potential barriers to learning and apply my knowledge of psychological theory generally to support pupils with their learning, confidence and motivation.

Nurturing approach: I believe that every young person can thrive in their own way if given the right support. My nurturing approach recognises the importance of developing a positive relationship with the pupil for their confidence, wellbeing and successful learning.

Coaching style: My coaching style aims to empower the young person and help them become curious, independent and resilient learners for life. This involves encouraging my pupils to ask questions and find the answers for themselves.
